The first time my husband took me to eat to Tom’s Thumb I could not stop looking around at everything that made this shop so cool….or should I call it a gas station? A car wash? Oops, nope, it’s a restaurant right? Let’s just say that it’s all those things in ONE! We were greeted right away by their friendly staff and asked us if we wanted to sit in the main dining area (where they can take your order and deliver your food) or somewhere else. If you don’t sit in the main area then you order your food at the counter and they’ll bring the food to you once it’s ready.
We chose to sit at a table by the car wash. I loved the wood table and thought it would make a fantastic backdrop to photograph the food. If I have the option then I’ll go for the aesthetics. Yes, I’m picky like that
But let’s move on and explore this place shall we?
The gift area has plenty of stuff for you to chose from for that special occasion. In fact, I think I’m going back to get some gifts pretty soon. Psst, I don’t advise taking make up lessons from that mannequin or you’ll end up in the cast for the 90s movie “To Wong Foo…..”.
My hubby ordered “Tom’s Homemade Sourdough Waffles” Made with their signature 100+ year old sourdough starter w/bacon – $9. He said the waffles were light but full of flavor. On a side note – somehow the bacon is missing from this photo… I think he ate it before I could photograph it…hmmm snicker!
My brother in law ordered the “Breakfast Tacos” – scrabbled eggs with potato, cheese and brisket $7.50. He also ordered a side of grits $2.75. He couldn’t stop eating them and made sure we all got a bite to taste how good they were. He definitely enjoyed them!
From their “Classics” options I ordered the “2 Egg Breakfast” Cooked to order with choice of 2 sides & toast $8.50 (I chose hashbrown cakes & fruit salad). I also ordered their “Homemade Pancakes” since I had to taste them! I’m a little skeptical when it comes to pancakes since most places don’t deliver what they promise. However, their acclaimed 100+ year old recipe is delicious, buttery and melts in your mouth! I want them now!
The patio is located by the parking lot but the tall plants they have surrounding the area gives you enough privacy for your dining experience. It was a beautiful morning in April and lots of people chose to dine al fresco as you can see.
As a bonus, you’ll get to enjoy this gorgeous view as you drive to Tom’s Thumb. The McDowell Sonoran mountains look and feel so close that you’ll want to drive up for a hike… after you fuel up at Tom’s Thumb of course 😉 This area is a great reminder that the Valley of the Sun is truly a beautiful place to live in and to visit. Thumbs up all around!
