2 cocktail glasses with sangria on a green table

Patio, grilling and pool weather is right around the corner, and I’m getting a head start with this Watermelon Sangria, which is refreshing and the perfect drink to cool you down.

Even though sangrias are traditionally made using red wine, I personally love the cool and refreshing flavor of a good Rose wine on a warm day. Especially when watermelons are in season, there is honestly nothing better in my opinion that a big pitcher of refreshing sangria.

two cocktail glasses filled with a red drink and garnished with watermelon balls. A wine bottle on the side

Ingredients

  • Watermelon: This is the star of the show. Pick a seedless, ripe and fresh watermelon (about a small watermelon).
  • Orange and lime slices will add a nice citrus balance to this Sangria.
  • The alcohol: Vodka and your favorite Rose wine. You can also use white wine if you prefer. Make sure the wine is cold!
  • Juice: Fresh orange juice is best but a good bottled kind will work too.
  • For the garnish: Reserve some watermelon chunks

Variations

Feel free to experiment and create variations that suit your taste and occasion. Here are a few ideas to inspire you:

  • White Wine Sangria: Swap the red wine for a crisp and fruity white wine like Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio. This variation pairs beautifully with summer fruits like peaches and strawberries.
  • Sparkling Sangria: For a celebratory twist, add some bubbly to your sangria. Replace a portion of the wine with sparkling wine or champagne, and watch the bubbles dance in your glass.

Pairing Sangria

For a party, serve along with a delicious guacamole, tortilla chips and an amazing salsa and that’s all you need for a wonderful time!

Since this is a light and fruity sangria, it’s perfect to serve with seafood and fish dishes. Pair it Ceviche De Camaron, Fish tacos, or these Blackened Salmon Tacos for a refreshing combination.

Tips & Notes

  • Did you know that you can freeze watermelon? Yup, you can freeze it in chunks or just juice it and have it ready to serve later when watermelons are out of season. If you freeze it, then your sangria will be even colder when made. It ads a great texture to it.
  • Spirits and Liqueurs: In addition to wine, sangria often includes spirits or liqueurs for added depth of flavor. Brandy is a common choice, but you can also use rum, or flavored liqueurs like triple sec or orange liqueur.
  • Storage: If you have leftover sangria, store it in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 days. Keep in mind that the fruit may become softer over time, so it’s best to consume it within a couple of days for optimal freshness.

  3. Everything, as always, looks fabulous! Funny you mention buying a juicer! I just returned ours to Macy’s and got my $200 refunded! Why? We told our internist, who is also a nutritionist about our juicing efforts! She really cautioned us against the practice because juicing removes all the nutrients founding the pulp that is removed in the process! So, caution! I thought you would want to know. Your work is so beautiful!
