I debated for a while whether to post this here on my blog since I only post recipes and not home related stuff. It’s a food blog but it’s also a personal blog so I decided to go for it. Why not?
March 2016 will be my husband’s and my tenth anniversary together (married 4 years). To celebrate, we decided to buy a house!! We’re postponing any long vacations, including a trip to Italy in 2017, so we can put that money toward the house. Buying a home comes with soooo many unexpected expenses so expensive trips need to be placed on the back burner for now. But the trade-off is well worth it.
We didn’t know where we wanted to settle and didn’t commit to buy until we “knew” where that special place would be. After contemplating many Phoenix areas and suburbs, we decided to stay in Surprise where we currently live for many reasons. Without going into details (don’t want to bore you all!) here are a few of the decision factors:
- Paul works in Surprise and loves his job, so changing locations wasn’t going to happen any time soon. Other areas of the valley would have him commuting to work at least 30 minutes each way. I’m lucky to work from home so I’m more flexible in where I can live.
- After a 1.5 years of living here, it won our hearts: More calm & safe area, very friendly people and we LOVE the crop fields that surround where we live. It’s very exciting to see what fruits and vegetables are in-season and guessing what the new growing crop is.
Now onto the house shall we?
Our new home is a cozy craftsman floor plan with open space living. It’s a little bit over 1900 sq ft. which is plenty for two people plus the occasional times when our sons come and visit and stay for the weekend.
I would say that the neighborhood we chose is one of the least cookie-cutter ones – you know where all the houses are the same color and look the same. My goal is to make this home special and “un” cookie-cutter it even more, especially the interior. Luckily, our builder is as close to a custom home as you can get and we’re starting with a great base! I hope you follow me through this process
