This Tequila Sunrise brings a double hit of citrusy goodness, combining fresh orange and lime juice, tequila, and simple syrup to combat the tartness of the lime. This version of Tequila Sunrise is made without grenadine and you’ll love how simple it is to make.

Three glasses filled with ice and a cocktail drink.

We’re taking this Tequila Sunrise back to its original roots but with a twist! A unique blend of flavors make for a simple and gorgeously warm-colored cocktail. Tequila Sunrise is a blend of tequila and fresh orange juice. This version of Tequila Sunrise is made without grenadine and you’ll love how easy it is to make.

The orange juice and grenadine version of the popular recipe didn’t come along until the 70’s.  Our twist to it is to bring it back to the original version: Tequila sunrise without grenadine!

A cocktail filled with ice and tequila sunrise.

The Ingredients

We thought the original recipe was too tart so we experimented and came up with our own.  The difference is we added less lime, a touch of fresh orange juice, triple sec and simple syrup.

  • Fresh oranges and limes
  • Creme de cassis: This is what gives that beautiful amber color.
  • Tequila
  • Simple syrup
  • A splash triple sec and club soda
  • Plus crushed ice for serving

The result, in our humble opinion, is a great blend of flavors.  Delish!

How To Make Tequila Sunrise

Grab your favorite short cocktail glasses and mix all ingredients except the triple sec & club soda. Fill with crushed ice and add the splash of triple sec & club soda. Mix well with a stirrer.

Finish it off with a slice of orange, limes or a cherry if you’re feeling fancy. Refreshing, easy, and you’re ready to sip on your homemade sunshine!

Tips and Notes

  • Make a large batch of this cocktail for parties just by mixing all ingredients except the triple sec & club soda. You can add the splash when you serve each individual glass.

Quick history

Most people are familiar with the Tequila Sunrise made with orange juice and grenadine.  Our recipe finds its roots right here in Arizona!  A bartender at the famous Arizona Biltmore came up with it in the 1930’s at the request of a frequent guest asking for a refreshing tequila drink.  So he created the now famous Tequila Sunrise.
